Snow Leopard has text substitutions built in
I just checked System Preferences' "Language & Text" option after reading this blog post from Mailplane and discovered Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6) has text substitutions!
I have Typinator which does all this (and more), but it will be happy news for some of my friends. If you wear many hats, you can add your various signatures for starters!
